Mission: Dessert Hunt in Penang

What can be more satisfying than a sweet retreat after a busy day? Or to fix that sugar rush that has been driving your sanity up in 7th heaven. Truth be told, it’s not often the hawker stalls or restaurants we visit that fill the void of an adventurous rendezvous and to complete your palate in consistency. Below are the five places that could fix your cravings and put a smile on your face.

Whisk @ Lebuh Queen

Whisk is an artisan pastry café – one which believes in limitless possibilities. The journey for Whisk began from its humble beginnings, growing from a handful selection to its current choice of colourful delights. Whisk also serves toasts and drinks to complete one’s appetite. It could be well recommended for a casual friends and family gathering or a sweet-date with your partner, savouring the taste of its nostalgic charm.

If you are torn between the richness of sweet and savoury tastes, Moody Cow is definitely your place to go. This café serves one of the best cheesecakes in town, offering aromatic flavours of salty egg, cempedak and durian as their signature must-haves. At first glance, the price hikes up one’s anticipation with high expectations in its quality and flavours. Once savoured, the rest is history.

HOLY FRICKING CAKEBALLS 😍 Don't @ me but I'm not one to get excited over cheesecake, I mean I'll never turn one down if it's placed in front of me (much like any dessert 😂), but it would be one of my last choices off a dessert menu and I'd never go out of my way to get one, but the second I set eyes on Moody Cow I was sold, both on sizes and flavours – it's literally like Cheesecake Factory and I've never seen anywhere else like it.. I mean just look at this slab!😍😍 A ridiculous number of flavours, but it was the cake / cheesecake hybrids that I was after – a normal biscuit base with a plain cheesecake topping will never really tempt me, no matter how exciting the flavours are – it's the add ins and layers I'm after! {tbf it was more chocolate and cake than cheesecake which is probably why I loved it so much!} It didn't take me long to decide on (or demolish 🙈) this insane "Forever Love" creation – layers of chocolate cake, cheesecake, Nutella, Ferrero rochers and chocolate, piled up into a monster slab that (according to the sign!) weighed in excess of 650 grams! It's definitely pricey, coming in at over 40 dollars per slice (around 8 quid), especially when you consider how insanely cheap things are here generally, but considering the size and sheer weight of it it's actually not that bad – if you weren't as greedy as me you could probably share.. everyone around me in the cafe was sharing about a slice between four 🥺🤭 In fairness I'd happily have shared a few different slices as they all looked so good but no one with me could even be tempted into one bite.. they all concurred it looked far too rich and sickly, aka exactly what I look for in a dessert 😂
